We have finished tapping all the tubing on the 21st of February. We will tap the buckets in a week or so if the weather agrees with us. We have 7,200 trees on tubing this year. We are hoping for a great season. Please join us on the farm for Maine Maple Sunday this year. We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Did you make maple pumpkin pie or any other great Thanksgiving treats with your Hall Farms maple products?
We are getting ready for the holiday season by taking our annual family vacation. We will be gone from December 2-9, but rest assured, we will be back on the 9th and anything ordered from December 9-15 will be shipped in time for Christmas.

A little rain didn't dampen our spirits at the fair today. We have had a great beginning to the Fryeburg Fair week, and understand that the sun is going to shine for most of the rest of the week. Stop by and get your maple cotton candy, some maple cream, and some maple syrup for your pancakes and waffles.

It's was a busy summer, and today, fall arrives. Farmington Fair is in full swing this week, and we will get over to the fair to see Caleb show his pig and his steer this week, but then our attention turns to getting ready for Fryeburg Fair in a couple of weeks. Stop by the sugar house and get your maple cotton candy and say hello while you are there.
This fall is full of football, fairs, and phone calls. Caleb is playing football and having a great time. I love going to watch his games and cheer him on. Fryeburg Fair is just around the corner, and of course Farmington Fair is this week. And the phone calls have been with my daughter Amanda, who is loving the start of her freshman year at Yale. She just auditioned for and made two orchestras (can you tell I am a proud dad?!) at school. She is a wonderful viola player!

Summertime is busy here at Hall Farms - lots of haying to do since the weather has been hot and sunny. But, I didn't want today to pass by without taking a minute to wish a very Happy Birthday to my "favorite" cousin, Beth. She is the one that keeps this website updated and helps me out with other computer-related tasks. She is my MUCH younger cousin, and I wanted to be sure to say "Happy Birthday Young Lady" to her on her 39th birthday! Take the day off, Beth, and ENJOY! |

Today, my daughter Amanda graduated second in her class at Mt. Blue High School. She is headed to Yale in the fall - and we are so proud of her! She won a national "Got Milk?" scholarship and gets to head to Disney World soon to film a commercial for it. To be awarded one of those scholarships, seniors had to write about how milk has helped them. Well, not only has milk helped Amanda stay healthy, it has also provided the livelihood of her dairy farm family for more than eight generations. Way to go Amanda! |

Sap season is over, and all in all, it was a good year for us. We made about 800 gallons of syrup, and that is with 1,300 less taps than we used last year. We also estimate that between 1,200 and 1,500 people turned out for Maine Maple Sunday this year. Thanks again for taking the trip to East Dixfield to join us. More than 600 pancake breakfasts were served that day as well!
Right now, with sap season behind us, my son and I are taking a hunter safety class together. It's wonderful to be able to spend time with him now so that later in the year we can spend time together in Maine's great outdoors. With him playing football, baseball, and basketball, he is one busy kid...so this time together is priceless to me. |

Thanks to everyone who came to this year's Maine Maple Sunday. We had a great day and it was so nice to see all of you at the farm. The kids really liked our Farmall tractors and we saw lots of them "driving" them all day. The heifers in the barn were also a big hit. And of course - the maple cotton candy!
The big news at Hall Farms this week is that my daughter Amanda was accepted to Dartmouth and to Harvard! She had already heard from Yale and some other schools as well. I am VERY proud of her and can't wait to hear where she decides to go in the fall.

I am happy to report that we have made a good crop of syrup so far. The weather isn't great right now, but we are in hopes of making some more syrup.
The plans are all final for Maine Maple Sunday - and we expect another good crowd this year. Join us on Sunday for the pancake breakfast, which starts at 8:00 a.m., and visit the saphouse and barn starting at 10:00 a.m. We hope to see you at the farm! |

As of today we have boiled sap 10 times and made more than 500 gallons of delicious Maine maple syrup. Last year we didn't even boil for the first time until March 13 - and the year before, it was March 28 before we made our first batch.
We hope you are making plans to join us for Maine Maple Sunday on March 28 at the farm in East Dixfield. We have new calves in the barn and hope you will come meet them and join us for a great day on the farm and at the saphouse. And, don't forget the delicious pancake breakfast! |

The big news in my family is that my daughter Amanda has been accepted to Yale! I am so proud of her!
We have had 12+ inches of snow this week and- believe it or not - the sap has run pretty well. We have made 100 gallons of syrup so far, with another 40+ tomorrow. The color has been the lightest we have seen in many years. |

Well, I guess we didn't need to wait until next month for the sap to start running. We made our first 30 gallons of syrup today - a full five weeks earlier than we did in 2008 (that year the sap ran VERY late, not until March 28th). The warm weather has started the season off quickly and we are going to make more syrup later this week. |

Eight days after we started tapping, we finished tapping all of our 6,100 trees. We tapped 1,500 less than we had planned because one orchard that we had access to was sold, and we can no longer use those trees. We are getting ready for the sap to run next month and will keep you posted. |

Winter has arrived here on the farm in East Dixfield. Today's snowstorm has brought about 10 inches of snow so far - with more to come. We are getting holiday orders processed - you can place your holiday orders here and have them shipped directly to your loved ones for Christmas.

It's great to see the sun shining today - for what is the biggest day of the Fryeburg Fair. We have been busy this week - making lots of maple cotton candy and visiting with people who ask about the syrup making process. Thanks to everyone who has stopped by so far for their annual fair visit! We are glad we bought more whoopie pies this year as you all seem to like them VERY much!

The first two days at Fryeburg Fair have been great! Thanks to all of you who have stopped by the sugarhouse to buy cotton candy, maple syrup, and other products. So far the weather has been decent and we hope the forecast stays good right through the rest of the week. I guess we might get some rain midweek, but fair folks are a hardy bunch - and we know a few raindrops won't keep you away from the fair AND our cotton candy!
Stop by and say hi if you are at the fair. We have more whoopie pies than last year (when we ran out)...so have a great lunch or dinner at the fair and then come see us for a sweet Maine maple treat for dessert! |

Randy and I went to northern Maine to look at a combine. A combine cuts the grain and knocks the grain off, then saves the grain and discards the rest. We now have one and the next morning harvested our oats. Being an organic dairy farm, organic grain is very expensive, so in the future we hope to grow more of our own grain. Finally, some summertime heat! With temperatures well into the 90s, it was a good day for Dad to take the camper and the young grandchildren to the beach. Randy is off to Skowhegan Fair this week and that's a sign of things to come. I can't believe Labor Day is just three weeks away. We're just finishing up first cutting of hay and second crop has already been started this year. Took a break this weekend for the Wilton Blueberry Festival, and Caleb ran the Kids 1 Miler. Kids who raced ranged in age from 5 to 15 with over 100 kids participating. Caleb finished fourth overall in 6 minutes and 32 seconds. He was the first in his age category, and fourth overall. Congratulations Caleb! |

We are so happy to see the sun shining today at the farm. It's been a very wet summer - so we haven't had much to report here. The rain has made haying difficult, though we did put up 100 round bales of hay last weekend, and are tedding some hay today in hopes of baling more in the next day or two (if the sun stays). We hope that you are having a great summer and are using our maple syrup when you have family and other guests staying with you. |

A lot of things have been happening here since the last journal update. We passed our organic recertification last week. We have had a week of good weather so the haylage was put in as well as some of the nicest first cut hay that we have ever put in the barn...
Now we are suppose to get a few days of rain, which is something we need again. Let's hope it doesn't last too long this year. Last summer, a few days turned into a month. From July 12, 2008 to August 12, 2008 we never cut any hay because it rained every day! |

Well summer is in full swing here at the farm. We put in the first dry hay of the season yesterday. We will put in the first haylage of the season today and will continue on haylage for the next week or so depending on the weather. For the first time we are going to plant some organic corn for the dairy cows. We will plant it in a couple of weeks and then chop it in the middle of October. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Now that the syrup is all made, the trees are untapped and the equipment is all washed and put away for next year. We can now think about get the cows out on green grass. It's amazing how we went from snow to green grass in just 4 weeks. The last of the winter's manure has been spread on the fields and with the rain we have gotten, we will be cutting grass for haylage in a couple of weeks. (Haylage is grass that is cut and left to dry for 24 hours and then chopped in small pieces, piled, and left to cook, then feed to the cows. It smells like pickled grass.) I know things are moving closer to summer because my lawn has been mowed and Caleb is playing Little League baseball 5 days a week. Today is his first game.....go Cardinals! |

Good Morning,
Well sapping is finally over. We made a couple of small batches this past week. Our total production for 2009 was 825 gallons. This is an above average year for us. Our production per tap is always small compared to other prducers, and the reason for this is 50% of our taps are on a north slope.These trees run less sap than south slope trees.
I hope you have enjoyed the journal this spring. I will continue to keep you posted about the happening here at Hall Farms. It would be nice to get some feedback on your interests about the farm. This helps make the journal a little more ineresting if I have some questions to answer....

I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. The weather has turned cold here, and the sap continues to flow. Monday was a bit too cold for a good run. We will gather today and hopefully make another 50-60 gallons tonight. Our days are numbered but the weather looks good for sapping thru Friday....

We at Hall Farms aren't really sure how to explain it other than good things happen to people who wait..... The sap has deceided to flow for at least a day or two more. We made 78 gallons of syrup last night, much to our surprise. We are glad we waited because a lot of producers in our area called it quits last weekend. With more cold weather predicted, the season may last a few days longer. We'll keep you posted! |

Things have slowed down a bit this week as the weather has been a bit too warm at night. We did however make 25 gallons of syrup on Monday the 6th of April. I got up this morning and the temp was 24 and the mud puddles were frozen. So let's hope that the season is going on a little longer. The weather looks good for the next few days. If the trees will cooperate we could have a very good season. The syrup was a little darker than usual but the flavor is excellent... |

Not much happening on the maple front this weekend. I guess the season is almost over; with the exception of a freeze or two this week, it will be done by next weekend. We've had a pretty good year but not a record breaker. I guess we are lucky from what I've been hearing, most producers are left with a small crop AGAIN... |

We boiled again yesterday and made 111 gallons in 3 hrs 25 minutes. The color has been a little on the dark side, but the crop is coming around to be average. The weather didn't get cold enough last night for the sap to run today so we worked around the farm today on odd jobs. I went to the Maine Maple Producer monthly meeting last night in Augusta. They are working on the North American Maple Producers national meeting, to be held in Bar Harbor in October 2009. I'll keep you posted. |

Boy the weather in the State of Maine has lived up to its reputation. Wait five minutes and it will change! Sap ran like a brook yesterday so plenty of sap to boil today. Of course it was too warm to freeze last night so we left the pumps on and it ran all night and is still running this morning. We are hoping for a few more freezes before we have to call it quits for 2009. |

Sap didn't run much today, but we finished gathering and then made syrup this afternoon. We made another 73 gallons. Boy, the flavor has been good this year, but the color has been on the darker than average side. It rained hard this afternoon and evening. The sap won't freeze tonight, but after that it looks more promising for the next week or so. We'll keep our fingers crossed... |

Sap ran again yesterday and for awhile last night . We made 55 gallons of syrup today, so our total is 450 gallons. The sap didn't freeze last night but it ran some this afternoon anyway.... go figure! We will gather tomorrow morning and wash tanks and be ready for the next run... |

Well Mother Nature opened the flood gates yesterday afternoon. We thought we would gather only a few loads of sap and we got seven before 4pm. I made 83 gallons of syrup in just 2 hrs and 25 minutes. Lucky everything went according to plan.
We froze again last night and the highs today are suppose to be in the upper 40's so things look good for another sap run. I'll keep you posted. The only bump in the road yesterday was the oil truck came to deliver oil to the saphouse( for those who don't know, the evaporator burns oil at the rate of 30 gallons/hr.) and the bill was $1138.80. OUCH..... |

Good Morning,
Well another good freeze last night. This is good for sapping - cold nights and warm days. Theses are the predictions for the next few days. We've been cold here the last couple of days so not much in the way of sap flow. Today we will collect the sap that has run the past couple of afternoons, and we will make another barrel of syrup today.
I almost forgot, but MMS wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for my first rate crew. I would like to thank each and every one of them for the outstanding job they did on Sunday.

Now that the rush of Maine Maple Sunday (MMS) is behind us, we can get down to the business of making the the rest of the 2009 crop of award winning Hall Farms maple syrup!
MMS was a beautiful day with a nice spring feel to the air. We had one of the biggest crowds ever. We served over 1,000 people with all you can eat pancakes and sausage for breakfast or ice cream with maple syrup for dessert. The crowd enjoyed the animals in the dairy barn, the antique Farmall tractors in the yard, and then into the saphouse to see the 6x14 evaportor with RO machine producing 35 gallons of Hall Farms maple syrup per hour. The syrup was then filtered thru the 10" filter press then pumped into the canner and then into the plastic jugs. So many people enjoyed purchasing warm maple syrup that they had just seen being made.
We made betwen 150 and 160 gallons of syrup that day. This puts our total to around 310 for the season. One more boil and we'll be ahead of last year. The bar isn't to high as last year was the poorest season we had ever had...

We are off to a good start to the 2009 maple season. We've made syrup the past couple of days, and the weather looks promising for the upcoming weekend. We will keep our fingers crossed as things seem to change pretty quick this time of year.
We've had enough sap to make 113 gallons of syrup so far this year. This is good for as early as it is in March. As a rule the best sapping weather is yet to come, usually the last week of March and the first week of April. But with Mother Nature, you never know and we have to be ready for her at any time.
This might be the last journal update until after Maine Maple Sunday, So here is the update as we know it to be. The pancake breakfast starts at 8am in the old schoolhouse (no early birds please). $7.00 for all you can eat with $4.00 for kids under 12. Then after that the dairy barn is opening at 9:30 with viewing of the dairy cows and calves. Then off the saphouse for free ice cream with maple syrup beginning at 10am. This goes until we run out of ice cream. We've bought enough to serve well over 800 so it should last well into the afternoon. Remember you can just have ice cream at the saphouse and have a quick tour or come and enjoy the farm for a couple of hours. The crew at Hall Farms welcomes you to enjoy yourself, be safe, ask plenty of questions....and have a GOOD time!!!!

Wow what a weekend! The weather has finally broken for the first really good sap run. We made syrup again, and this puts the total at over 60 gallons so far this year.
Things went smoothly in the saphouse for the which is a good sign of things to come. I guess everyone who makes syrup got a good weekend because we sold supplies like there was no tomorrow.
Joanne's getting ready for Maine Maple Sunday with the planning of food and other supplies. She worked on getting the schoolhouse cleaned for all the guests that will visit. Hopefully spring is here for a few days of good weather for making syrup as the bulk orders keep piling up. If everything goes right there should be plenty of syrup to go around for MMS.
Gotta go finish the paperwork for the weekend and milk the cows this morning as it's my turn again. Not until 5am though so I still have an hour and a half to finish on the computer..... |

We gathered all the sap yesterday afternoon and evening. So today we can clean the evaporator and will get the season off and running. Maybe Friday the 13th will bring us luck this year! We kept the pumps running until 1:30 this morning as the sap was still running even though it was only 33 degrees. We gathered the second load of sap from the big orchard at 10:30 last night. Boy things started quickly this year! The weather forecast is for cold the next couple of days. That will give us time to finish cleaning the saphouse and wash the R. O. and evaporator. Dad will pick up the 200+ cases of jugs on Thursday, and they will be available for sale Friday at noon (pushing that to the limit, I know) Off to Boston today for a concert and home tomorrow afternoon. What a day! As we get closer to Maine Maple Sunday, we are excited to say that we finished tapping all but our buckets. We gathered our first load of sap today because the weather was right for the sap to start running - a sure sign that spring is on its way. We hope to make our first batch of sap this weekend. Today was the first warm day of the season, and the snow started to settle. The sap started to flow a little this afternoon. We started both vacuum pumps and looked for leaks. The leaks seem to be less than in years past. We will work on tubing to get it repaired before the season gets under way. Of the 8,000 taps we put in, we have installed 6,000 or so. If the weather holds we will be done tapping on Wednesday afternoon. Maybe we will make some syrup by next weekend, we will keep our fingers crossed. |

Not as much snow as expected yesterday -- only about 5 inches. Snowshoeing was better than in the past few days. The snow was a little firmer so you stayed closer to the top. We worked in the bush all day with a crew tapping, and I worked to put in a new vacumn booster. This is a container installed in the mainline to increase the volume of vacumn in the bush. Snow again today with predictions of more than 12 inches. We will tap in the snow today because it is getting down to crunch time and we're not done. Weather looks to be cold all week so at this point we have a few more days before the sap runs. |

Not too much new happening here on the farm. We continue to tap and have reached the half-way point. We are on track to finish about the same time as last year, which was March 11th. The weather is predicted to be below average in temp. this week This will make the snow hard and snowshoeing easier thus speeding up the tapping process. Hi folks! We are still in the process of tapping, but after receiving 26+ inches of snow on Monday it has slowed to a snail's pace. It's hard to believe that we had record amounts of snow two years in a row.... We all know what happen last year with this much snow. One of the poorest crops in history. Too cold and windy to tap today. We worked in the sugarhouse getting ready for the first run. We rewired the reverse osmosis machine (RO) today. We had moved it in the RO room so it had to be unhooked from power. Supplies keep coming in daily so that's a sign of things to come.... Have a good weekend everyone! |

Today was beautiful weather with the high about 51. We tapped and this made us hopeful of the weather to come. The weather man said no more warm weather in sight which is good because it is still too early, and we're not ready. We normally won't make syrup until the 10-15th of March. |

Today is the official start of the maple season here at Hall Farms. We have all the line repaired and are ready to go. So let the tapping begin! We will probably start slow as the weather isn't always agreeable this time of year. Hopefully we'll be done on the pipeline in 2-3 weeks. The buckets won't go out until sometime in mid March. Good Morning, We worked on putting up new tubing yesterday and today. If things go as planned today, we'll finish it. Then we move on to connecting to the main line and putting in drops. The "drops" are a term used for the piece that connects from the 5/16 lateral lines to the tree. We are spending only about 4 hours at a time in the woods because of deep snow and very cold weather. |

A couple of things... We got about a foot of new snow, so no working in the bush until the beginning of the week. A little rain for Tuesday would settle the snow and make the snowshoeing easier. We played hooky yesterday and went snowmobiling; it was great, and we saw some beautiful country. Hated to come home because the trails were so smooth. |

It's been a very cold month of January and things are progressing slowly. Things are progressing though, and our hope is to be ready to tap by mid February. Another 1-1.5 feet of snow is predicted to fall here in East Dixfield today and tonight. |

We have had a beautiful winter weekend here at the farm. It is cold, but the sun was shining and we were out getting tubing ready for the sap season, whenever it begins this year. There is a lot of work necessary to get ready to tap more than 8,000 trees. We need to get out in the woods to make sure the trees are ready so that when Mother Nature decides it's time, we can be ready to make that sweet Maine maple syrup our customers (and family) have grown to love! |

We're Back! We are delighted to once again use our online journal to keep you updated about our work to bring you the freshest, most delicious Maine maple syrup. Work has already begun this year. We are out in the deep snow and cold weather making sure that tubing is up and in good shape so when the sap starts to flow we are there to collect it. We are excited about the beginning of the year and are hopeful for a good season. Stay tuned for more information and updates throughout the year.
